Dear Friends and Supporters of After the Harvest,
I hope this message finds you well, and I extend my warmest greetings as we approach the season of giving. I’m Randy Burdge, President of the Board of Directors for After the Harvest, and today, I’m reaching out with a heartfelt appeal that I believe has the power to transform lives and communities.
Last year, I challenged you to join me in supporting ATH on Giving Tuesday, and your response was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Today, I come to you once again, not just as a volunteer but as someone deeply committed to the incredible impact we can make together.
As I reflect on the past year, the faces of the individuals we’ve touched and the communities we’ve strengthened remain etched in my heart. I continue to witness the profound joy on people’s faces as they receive fresh, nutritious produce—produce that, without After the Harvest, might have gone to waste. This work, preventing the needless disposal of nourishing food and ensuring that struggling families can enjoy wholesome meals, is the heartbeat of our mission.
“This year, I am excited to share with you an extraordinary opportunity to amplify your impact. From November 27 through December 1, in celebration of Giving Tuesday, I am personally committing to match every donation, up to $5,000. Your support during this critical time will enable us to expand our reach and provide even more nutritious meals to those facing food insecurity in our community.”
Now, let’s delve into a sobering reality that demands our attention: During the holiday season, ReFED estimates that a staggering 312 million pounds of food will go to waste, equating to approximately $609,000,000. To put this into perspective, this amount could provide eight meals for each of the 38.3 million people grappling with food insecurity in our nation.
But the consequences don’t end there. The environmental toll is substantial, with the production of this wasted food generating over 1,100,000 metric tons of CO2e—equivalent to the emissions of 169,000 cars driving for a full year. Additionally, it carries a water footprint of 104 billion gallons, equivalent to the water usage of everyone in New York City for three and a half months.
This isn’t just about numbers; it’s about people, our neighbors, and the shared responsibility we have to make a difference. Your donation, large or small, becomes a powerful force against this tide of waste and hunger. It becomes an investment in the well-being of families, in the reduction of environmental impact, and in the cultivation of a stronger, more compassionate community.
