Purple stained fingers, smiling faces and a wagon ride to a field of beautiful zinnias made our first berry picking at Big Springs Berries a real treat! Thanks to the generosity of Farmer Shane, we are able to glean fresh blackberries that go directly to folks who are seeking emergency food assistance.
In the Kansas City region, one in six children are food insecure, which means they don’t know where their next meal is coming from. During the summer months when school is out, fighting hunger is even more challenging. Fresh fruits and vegetables remind us all of the taste of summer. Unfortunately, not everyone has a chance to savor it. That’s where we try to help.
Last week, Riley (check out his video below!) and his family helped us pick over 175 lbs. of blackberries that went to folks in our community who need it most. We loved having them glean with us and always welcome volunteers of all ages! It’s such a joy to see kids learn where their food comes from and taste test along the way. Gleaning not only connects volunteers to beautiful, local farms like Big Springs, it provides a sense of purpose so that even the youngest catches on to the excitement of giving back!
We’re so grateful to all of our volunteers, growers, food agencies, and Gleaning Coordinators for the hard work you’re doing this summer (in this heat!) to help us provide healthy food to hungry people. If you haven’t already signed up to glean, it’s not too late! We’ll be harvesting through November. Don’t forget to sign up here!
